How to Reheat In-N-Out Fries (Without Ruining Them)

October 21, 2026 · In-N-Out Menu (unofficial fan guide)

Fresh-cut fries go soft fast — that is chemistry, not failure. The three reheating methods that actually work, ranked, plus the order that travels best.

Why They Go Soft in the First Place

In-N-Out fries are whole potatoes, cut in the store and cooked once in sunflower oil. Frozen commercial fries survive the ride home because they are coated and par-fried for exactly that journey; fresh fries are not built for travel. Moisture migrates from the soft centre to the crust within minutes, and the fry slumps. Nothing went wrong — you are tasting the trade the chain makes for freshness. The fix is dry heat and space.

The Methods, Ranked

Air fryer (best): 375°F / 190°C for 3-4 minutes in a single layer, shaken once. The crust re-crisps and the centre stays potato. Oven (close second): a hot oven at 425°F / 220°C, fries spread on a rack or tray in one layer, 5-7 minutes. Skillet (surprisingly good): a dry or barely-oiled hot pan, fries in one layer, tossed for 2-3 minutes — the closest to the original texture, if you watch them. The microwave is the one method to avoid: it steams the fries in their own moisture and finishes the softening the car ride started.

The Order That Travels Best

If you know the fries face a drive, order them well-done — the longer fry time drives out moisture and buys you a crisp window. Keep the bag open in the car (a closed bag is a steam room), lay the fries flat rather than bunched, and reheat only what you will eat: a reheated fry reheats exactly once.

And the Burger? Reheating the Rest of the Bag

Burgers reheat better than their reputation if you split the job: warm the patty and bun in a 350°F / 175°C oven for about five minutes, and keep the lettuce, tomato and spread cold to add back after — reheating the vegetables with the burger is what makes leftovers taste like leftovers. Cheese goes on in the last minute. It will not equal a fresh Double-Double, but it lands far closer than the microwave, which steams the bun into paste.

The shake, obviously, does not reheat. It does, however, freeze into a respectable ice cream — the one leftover that improves its category by waiting.

Quick Questions

Can you reheat Animal Style fries?

You can — air fryer, 3 minutes — but the cheese and spread melt into the fries rather than sitting on top. They come out more like loaded fry casserole. Fans are divided; the texture is different, the flavour survives.

How long do In-N-Out fries stay good?

At their best for about 10-15 minutes. After that, reheat with dry heat rather than eating them sad — three minutes in an air fryer genuinely revives them.
